Target surface marks

Fine scratches, scanner dust trails, and light abrasion often distract from faces. Restoration softens those lines so the subject is easier to see.

02

Honest limits

Deep gouges that cut across eyes or mouths may still leave traces or invented texture. Keep the original scan when damage is severe.

Review the watermarked restore result side by side with your upload. Unlock HD only if the cleanup still feels faithful.

What scratched-photo restoration can and cannot do

AI restore mode looks for small linear marks and soft noise that sit on top of an otherwise readable photograph. Light album scratches, hairline scrapes from a sleeve, and dust captured by a flatbed scanner are the usual candidates. The model predicts cleaner pixels from surrounding texture; it does not peel a physical emulsion or rebuild a missing original.

Severe gouges that remove facial features are a different problem. Crossing a cheek or eyelid with a deep scratch can leave the tool guessing. In those cases, treat the result as a sharing copy, keep the untouched scan as the archive, and consider a careful manual retouch later if the portrait matters for genealogy.

A practical workflow for scratched prints

Scan at 300 DPI or higher in even light. Crop the album window and scanner lid so the model focuses on the print, not the scrapbook. Upload that clean scan, choose Restore, and zoom in on eyes, hair, lettering, and fabric before you unlock HD.

If the photo is also black and white and you want color later, restore the scratches first. Clearer shapes give colorization a stronger source. Save each stage separately. For fold lines or tears, see the related damage pages linked below.

When to restore, when to stop

Stop when the face still looks like the person you remember and the scratch is no longer the first thing you notice. If the tool invents skin texture or smooths a distinctive scar you wanted to keep, discard that unlock and keep the original.

Packs are one-time: $2.99 for 1 credit, $6.99 for 3, $9.99 for 10, and $49 for 50. Preview first, then pay once only if you want the HD download. Read more on whether to restore or colorize first in our workflow guide.

Common questions

Know what AI can—and cannot—recover.

Can AI remove every scratch from an old photo?

It often softens fine scratches and dust lines, but deep gouges across faces may remain partly visible or look filled in. Preview before you unlock HD.

Does restoration change my original file?

No. You upload a copy and receive a separate result. Keep the original scan as the historical source.

Should I restore scratches before colorizing?

Yes for soft or marked black-and-white scans. Cleaner edges usually give a better colorization source. See our restore-or-colorize guide.

How much does it cost to unlock HD?

One-time packs start at $2.99 for 1 photo, then $6.99/3, $9.99/10, and $49/50. Preview first; no subscription.
